Air Pollution and Criminal Activity: Microgeographic Evidence from Chicago

نویسندگان

چکیده

A growing literature documents that air pollution adversely impacts health, productivity, and cognition. This paper provides the first evidence of a causal link between aggressive behavior, as documented by violent crime. Using geolocation crimes in Chicago from 2001–2012, we compare crime upwind downwind major highways on days when wind blows orthogonally to road. Consistent with research linking aggression, find increases sides interstates. Our results suggest may reduce welfare affect behavior through wider set channels than previously considered. Polluted Morality: Air Pollution Predicts Criminal Activity and Unethical Behavior.

Air pollution is a serious problem that affects billions of people globally. Although the environmental and health costs of air pollution are well known, the present research investigates its ethical costs. We propose that air pollution can increase criminal and unethical behavior by increasing anxiety. Analyses of a 9-year panel of 9,360 U.S. cities found that air pollution predicted six major...

Who suffers from indoor air pollution? Evidence from Bangladesh.

In this paper, we investigate individuals' exposure to indoor air pollution. Using new survey data from Bangladesh, average hours spent by members of households in the cooking area, living area and outdoors in a typical day are combined with the estimates of pollution concentration in different locations in order to estimate exposure. We analyse exposure at two levels: differences within househ...

Air pollution, economic activity and respiratory illness: Evidence from Canadian cities, 1974-1994

Many studies have reported a relationship between urban air pollution levels and respiratory health problems. However, there are notable variations in results, depending on modeling approach, covariate selection, period of analysis, etc. To help clarify these factors we compare and apply two estimation approaches: model selection and Bayesian model averaging, to a new data base on 11 Canadian c...

Cancer risk of air pollution: epidemiological evidence.

Epidemiological studies on the effect of urban air pollution on lung cancer were surveyed. Overall, the studies from many countries point to a smoking-adjusted risk in urban areas over countryside areas that is higher by a factor of up to 1.5. The extent to which urban air pollution contributes to this excess remains unknown. Studies on diesel-exposed occupational groups show that urban air pol...
